The local region around Mirepoix

Château de Montségur - 12 kms from Lavelenet - is the the incredible last stronghold and refuge
of the Cathar heretics fleeing from Simon de Montfort during the Albigensian Crusade.
The siege here lasted for 10 months until 1244 when 200 heretics were burnt to death.

The charming walled village of Camon - about 12 kms away - with an Abbey that was founded by the
future Charlemagne in 778. The Abbey is open for visits.

Left - the walk outside the ramparts at Camon.
Right - more views of Camon

On the way to Camon and very close to Mirepoix is Lac Montbel
- excellent for swimming and relaxing in hot weather.
A few kms further on the same route is the larger 13C village of Chalabre
- a most historic place with corbelled houses in a circular layout.

Left - the attractive houses in the circular main street of Chalabre
Right - the dining room at the Hotel-de-France at Chalabre where they serve good
meals at a very reasonable price.

Drive a little south and you are right into the Pyrenees with quiet rural landscape
but always with the amazing backdrop of Pyrenees mountains.
The closest ski resort - we think - the resort at the Monts d'Olmes about 36 kms from
Mirepoix - however there is also Bonascre just outside Ax-les-Thermes and
about 90 kms away are the great ski slopes of Font Romeu and Andorra.

The ski fields at Mont d'Olmes.
On the route to the town of Limoux with the Corbières mountains in the distance
and the vineyards for the Blaquette-de-Limoux spreading out over the hills.

The high village of Fanjeaux - about 22 kms northeast en route to Castelnaudary -
originally founded by the Romans - then became a Cathar stronghold of heretics.
In 1215 the Dominican Order of monks was founded here by St Dominic -
and today Fanjeaux remains an important religious centre.

The village of Fanjeaux - with spectacular views out over the surrounding countryside.
Left - the ancient beamed ceiling of the market place
Right - the Abbey of Fanjeaux which is undergoing major restoration.

The town of Pamiers 20 kms away with many excellent shops, restaurants
and a very colourful history dating back to the Cathars.

And of course the grapes and the vines
are never far away.

The Pyrenees-Ariège region

We are very excited about our new cottage in the beautiful village of Mirepoix.
The region is called the Pyrenees-Ariege although Mirepoix is actually on the plain
about 20 kms before the serious mountains and has a warm and sunny climate.
It is 40 kms south west of Carcassonne, 80 kms south east from Toulouse,
about 30 from Foix - and about 90 kms north from Andorra and Spain via the N20.
There is a bus from Mirepoix to either Pamiers or Toulouse about 4 times a day.
